It’s a New Year: Will You Keep Your Resolutions?

Goals for 2021

We’re one month into the new year but it’s still not too late to set some goals. Note we say “goals” rather than resolutions. That’s because resolutions tend to be big, nearly-impossible-to-achieve ambitions. Goals, however, lend themselves perfectly to being broken down into small, achievable targets.

For instance:

  • Instead of resolving to lose weight, try weekly goals that will eventually get you there. For instance:
    • Week 1. Cut out one sugared drink.
    • Week 2. Start walking every other day for at least 15 minutes.
    • Week 3. Double the vegetables on your plate.
    • Week 4. Increase walking to every day.
    • etc.
  • Instead of resolving to take better care of yourself, try:
    • Week 1. Make a list of issues you’d like to address this year in order to be happier and healthier.
    • Week 2. Pick one item on the list to tackle. For instance, say it’s to address medical issues.
    • Week 3. Make appointments with healthcare professionals to get the necessary preventive and acute care to address any health-related concerns. Don’t forget your annual mammogram!
  • Instead of resolving to be a nicer person:
    • Make a list of 52 things you can do to help others and bring more kindness into the world. Each week perform one of those 52 items and cross it off.

The other advice we’d give is not to take on too much. The past year has been, to say the least, one of the most challenging in history. We all have our fingers crossed that 2021 will be better but, as we learned in 2020, there is only so much we can control. You can however, control how you behave every day to yourself and those around do.
